Wanting to keep the peace I've tried the cat deterent powders with mixed results (my cat lives with dogs so coyote urine doesn't scare it very much and cat learned to use the automatic dog door). I definately was hesitant to spend on something with mixed reviews and my neighbor has a dog so didn't want something that would bother it so I bought one CatStop. It didn't bother my dogs or the neighbors and it did bother the cat when i tested it in my house. I then set it up in my neighbors yard. It worked so well that the cat stopped going were it was located but then started to use the other side of the neighbors yard that wasn't covered by the CatStop. Needless to say had to get a second one but now that the entire yard is covered by CatStop the cat doesn't go near my neighbor's house. My neighbor is happy, their dog is happy and I'm happy. I think it works better where you can cover the entire approach the cat will take vs a large open space as the cat will just walk around it. I lucked out that the two approaches into my neighbor's yard were twenty feet wide gaps between the houses. It's been working for the last 6 months and counting knock on wood. I tried a chemical repellent and it worked, but only as long as it persisted - then the cats were back. Given the cost of the repellent, this seemed a bargain. I mounted the unit on a wall that enabled it to cover the entire planter area and then some. The planter has now been 100% cat-free for months. We are completely satisfied with this product.
